A torn rotator cuff is an injury to the muscles and tendons stabilizing your shoulder joint. It causes deep, dull shoulder pain, difficulty reaching overhead, weakness, and pain when sleeping on the affected side. Treatment ranges from physical therapy to surgery.
Common Symptoms
Pain: A dull ache deep in the shoulder that radiates down the arm.
Night Pain: Pain that prevents you from sleeping on the affected side.
Weakness: Difficulty lifting or rotating your arm.
Limited Mobility: Trouble completing everyday tasks like combing your hair or reaching into a coat sleeve.
Crepitus: A clicking or crackling sensation when moving the shoulder.
Main Causes
Acute Injury: A sudden tear caused by falling on an outstretched arm or lifting something heavy with a jerking motion.
Degenerative Wear: A chronic tear that develops slowly over time due to aging, repetitive overhead motions, or chronic tendinitis.
Treatment Options
Conservative Care: The majority of tears do not require surgery. Rest, ice, activity modification, and NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) help manage initial pain.
Physical Therapy: PT is often required to restore strength and flexibility to the surrounding muscles.
Surgery: If the tear is severe, the tendon has pulled completely away from the bone, or symptoms do not improve, your doctor may recommend arthroscopic surgery to reattach the tendon.
When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention
If you experience intense, sudden pain, an audible "pop" in your shoulder, or immediate inability to lift your arm following a fall or trauma, seek prompt evaluation from an orthopedic specialist.
Note: The pain from rotator cuff injuries can sometimes mimic other issues, making self-diagnosis difficult. For an accurate assessment and a customized recovery plan, consult an orthopedic specialist or use the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) directory to find a local shoulder expert.
